What is LASIK/Laser Vision Correction?

Laser Vision Correction improves vision by gently reshaping the cornea with cool laser light. The laser is usually applied beneath a thin protective flap (LASIK), or in some cases directly on the surface of the cornea (PRK, Epi-LASIK, or LASEK). Custom LASIK/Laser Vision Correction can offer you real benefits over traditional or conventional treatment. In conventional Laser Vision Correction, the laser treatment was determined primarily by a careful refraction (the familiar procedure used to determine your eyeglass prescription). The Procedure

Laser Vision Correction is fast, and it does not hurt. Numbing eyedrops will keep your eye comfortable during the procedure, which takes about 5 minutes. Afterwards, you may notice a mild sandy sensation or irritation, which usually improves with a short nap. By the next morning, most of our patients are seeing well enough to drive themselves in to our office for a quick checkup, and then to work as usual.

Recovery and Possible Side Effects

Laser Vision Correction is a safe, painless, rapid, and effective procedure. Like any surgical procedure, however, there are possible side effects and complications to be aware of. After LASIK, most patients regain excellent vision very quickly. There can, however, be some fluctuation for several days or weeks. Your eyes may be more dry after LASIK, and you’ll likely need to use lubricating eyedrops for some time. While the quality of most patients night vision improves or stays the same after Custom Lasik, you may experience some degree of halo, starburst, or ghosting. Other complications, such as an abnormal corneal flap, are much more rare. Laser Vision Correction is a surgical procedure, and therefore no one can offer a 100% guarantee.
